HCC/AVS is committed to assisting individuals with disabilities achieve their educational goals by providing appropriate accommodations and services based on individual, documented need. Part-time faculty need to be aware that the laws governing post-secondary institutions are different from those which govern provision of services to students with disabilities in K - 12. Students at HCC/AVS who request services or accommodations because of a disability MUST be referred to the Coordinator of Disability Services in the Guidance & Counseling Office, Parker Student Union. Instructors who provide or deny accommodations without following college policy put the college and themselves in legal peril should a grievance be filed.
In addition, the following statement should be included in all course syllabi. This statement is important because, in the event of a complaint, it is one way HCC/AVS can show it made a concerted effort to 1) inform students of their rights under the 1973 Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act, and 2) provide students with the information they need to access these rights.
