Alternative Assessment
Alternatives to traditional, standardized, norm- or criterion-referenced paper and pencil testing that may require students to answer an open-ended question, work out a solution to a problem, perform a demonstration of a skill, or in some way produce work rather than select an answer from choices on a sheet of paper.
Assessment
The process of collecting information about student learning.
Checklist
Enumeration of what must be occur or be present in order for a task to be successfully completed.
Competencies
The skills that, if mastered, will lead to the desired outcomes.
Evaluation
The process of judging the quality of students’ learning after an assessment has been administered.
Objective Test
A correct-answer test.
Outcomes
Knowledge, abilities, or attitudes that students should have as a result of instruction.
Reliability
The measure of consistency for an assessment instrument.
Rubric
A scoring guide used to evaluate subjective assessments by defining the criteria for assessment, explicitly describing performance characteristics, and rating the qualities of performance on a rating scale.
Subjective Test
A test in which the impression or opinion of the assessor determines the score for the performance. A test in which the answers cannot be known or prescribed in advance.
Validity
The degree to which the assessment accurately reflects the learning it was designed to measure.
